Every few weeks, I get uber transparent about the steps and the struggles I’m taking to build an online business. Feel free to follow along so you can gain useful internet marketing tactics (and avoid my mistakes). Here is my recent side hustle update:
1.) Don’t worry about competition: A lot of people worry about competitors coming along and stealing their ideas. As a result, many would-be entrepreneurs hesitate to ship. And stop. I started writing this update at 4:30AM. If my competitors want to beat me, they too can forgo sleep in favor of work.
2.) I owe you an apology: In my last update, I got really transparent and admitted that my Filmmaking Info business was doing terrible numbers. I even posted that I was negative $439 dollars for the year. After posting that, I got a lot of social shares and comments. And even though the feedback was good, I felt embarrassed and ashamed. So I deleted the post.
I’m not saying this won’t happen again. Truth is, it’s really easy to post about all the awesome stuff you’re doing in your life. But it’s really difficult to admit when things suck. The good news is, things are turning around…
3.) Outside of the day-to-day stuff: One hinderance to success is not having a big enough reason WHY. I’ve written about the WHY factor before. But over the past weekend my wife and I sat down and forced ourselves to get clear on some longer term life goals. In short, we agreed that spending time with family is paramount. But in order to do it right, we need to buy our freedom. This means early retirement, with enough money in the bank to do what we want to do, when we want to do it.
We’ve renewed our focus on buying only the stuff that makes us money, instead of buying stuff that takes our money. (If what I just said is a new concept, make sure you read a book called Rich Dad, Poor Dad.) The bottom line is, attaining FREEDOM is the reason WHY I’m up early. This update is a warm up for the other side hustle projects I aim to tackle before heading to work…
4.) One more thought on goals: At the risk of sounding like some sort of new age wu-wu guru – I believe you need to create a vision for your future that is big and magical. Having this vision gives you a purpose and makes your day to day crap feel less crappy and a little more fun.
5.) Email campaigns. To the uninitiated, this simply means that I’m now using software that allows me to send specific messages to people based on interest and behavior. For example, lets say you’re selling fruits on your website. Some people are there to buy apples. And some people are there to buy oranges. If you’re doing a linear campaign, you’ll typically send the same emails to everyone. Some days will focus on apples. Some days oranges.
But in a non-linear email campaign, you can create specific sequences based on what people like. One basic example is sending out an email where you say: Do you like apples or oranges? Then you ask them to click the link for whichever fruit they like more. If they click on apples, then the subscriber only gets emails about apples. Make sense?
In case your interested, the company I’m using and now getting paid to promote as an affiliate is Seva. The company was previously called Convertkit. My experience so far has been great. Prior to migrating to Seva, I used Aweber for a decade. And it have to admit, it is VERY challenging to go from a linear list based automation to non-linear automation.
Given the scary learning curve and the opportunity cost, I put off the migration for months. But after a few tests, it was the clean Seva interface and intuitive design that ultimately sold me. Find out more about Seva here.
